Maximillian sunflowers are large, very showy sunflowers that produce many seeds that are prized for birds and wildlife. A valuable nectar source for native bees, honey bees, and butterflies. Host plant for several species of butterfly and moth caterpillars including the painted lady and silvery checkerspot. Numerous 3” flower heads grow on each stalk. Does great in heavy clay and produces a lot of biomass. Clusters of woody stalks left up in winter provide shelter for birds and native bees. Starts growing from ground level in early spring to regain its full height in late summer. Can spread aggressively via rhizomes to form dense colonies. Fabulous habitat plant, but best grown where you have a bit of space.
