12 Plants

Attract a variety of butterflies with these native plants that are known to be butterfly magnets. Included plants have either abundant nectar that will feed adult butterflies (and a wide range of other pollinators) or they are important host plants that butterflies need for egg-laying and their caterpillars’ survival (or both!). Add the plants in this collection to an existing pollinator garden or create a new butterfly garden.

Plants included are:

  • 3 butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) or showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa)
  • 3 meadow (Rocky Mountain) blazing star (Liatris ligulistylis)
  • 3 old field (gray) goldenrod (Solidago nemoralis)
  • 3 pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea)

As the season progresses, other butterfly-favorite varieties may need to be substituted. Possible substitutions include western yarrow (Achillea millefolium (occidentalis)), smooth blue aster (Symphyotrichum laeve), New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), narrow-leaved coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia), or dotted gayfeather (Liatris punctata).

This collection:

  • Contains twelve plants in deep, air-prune pots (5.5″ deep and 2.8″ wide) that allow for a healthy root system (and no root circling),
  • Covers approximately 25 square feet, and
  • Includes detailed, printed information about planting, care, and maintenance.

These plants will grow well in most soils, including clay. Butterfly milkweed and meadow blazing can grow in clay as long as it is well drained. If you have clay and are concerned, let us know and we will substitute with showy milkweed and dotted gayfeather (Liatris punctata) if we have those in stock.

We recommend planting each species together in a cluster. This helps butterflies find them and it also helps them stand out to the human eye, making their colors appear more bold.
