Large Native Bee House

$40.00

Native bee houses are nesting boxes that help support increased native bee populations by providing a safe space for a variety of native bees to lay eggs. The eggs stay in the nesting tubes in winter and the next generation of bees emerges in the spring.

Our large, native bee house is attractive, rustic but very sturdy, unique, and designed with bee health as the top priority:

  • Thick, quality, cardboard tubes (never bamboo) that can be replaced annually to protect bee health
  • Tubes are 6″ long
  • Tubes are closed in the back to protect bee larva from predators
  • Constructed of thick, rough-cut pine with a roof of naturally rot-resistant cedar. The wood is not treated – no coatings, paint, or chemicals
  • Decorative branches are juniper, gathered from our property
  • Pre-drilled hole for mounting
  • Comes with instructions on how to install, maintain, and change nesting tubes

Our large native bee houses contain approximately 25 nesting tubes. We use paper nesting tubes, not bamboo, which is a poor choice for bee health. Tubes can be easily replaced by removing the center blocks that hold them in place.

Bee houses (sometimes called bee hotels) support solitary, native bee species that prefer to nest in tube-like structures that naturally occur in the wild. These bees are docile. They rarely sting; they do not nest in colonies; and they do not produce honey. They are highly effective pollinators of fruit trees, shrubs, and flowers.

When considering purchasing a native bee nesting box, know that they are not “set it and forget it” – they do require some care, although it is very simple. With a little care and attention, this will be a rewarding and fascinating addition to your habitat.

Best hung in a place that gets morning sun and afternoon shade. Comes with installation and maintenance instructions and a set of replacement nesting tubes.
