Milkweeds for Monarchs Collection

$54.00

9 Plants

Support struggling monarchs and other pollinators with three types of well-behaved milkweed. Milkweeds are the only plant that monarch butterflies will lay their eggs on. The milkweed leaves will feed monarch caterpillars and blooms provide nectar for the adult monarchs. Blooms will also draw in a wide range of other pollinators that will appreciate their abundant nectar. Add the plants in this collection to an existing pollinator garden or create a new milkweed patch.

Plants included are:

  • 3 showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa)
  • 3 butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa)
  • 3 horsetail milkweed (Asclepias subverticillata)

This collection:

  • Contains nine plants in all. It contains three types of milkweed in deep, air prune pots (5″ deep and 2.8″ wide) that allow for a healthy root system (no root circling),
  • Covers approximately 15 square feet, and
  • Includes detailed, printed information about planting, care, and maintenance.

Both showy and horsetail milkweeds grow well in most soils, including heavy clay. Butterfly milkweed can grow well in clay as long as it is well drained.

All milkweeds are deer and rabbit resistant. They are also toxic to livestock, especially horsetail milkweed.

Most milkweeds (except horsetail milkweed) have sensitive taproots. Care should be taken when transplanting to not disturb this taproot.

We recommend planting each milkweed species together in a cluster. This helps pollinators find them and it also helps them stand out to the human eye, making their colors appear more bold.

Take it to the next level:

Add plants from the Butterfly Collection to create a robust Monarch Waystation. Also, if you have wet areas in your garden/property consider adding Rose (Swamp) Milkweed as well, a beautiful milkweed that prefers moist soils.
