Saskatoon Serviceberry

Amelanchier alnifolia

Also known as western serviceberry or juneberry. The white flowers of this large multi-stemmed shrub are among the earliest spring blooms. The delicious berries, which ripen to blue or purple, are eaten by humans, birds, and other wildlife. Commonly grows in canyon bottoms where it appreciates a bit of shade and extra water. Foliage turns reddish in the fall. Beloved by native bees and an important larval host plant that supports 81 species of butterflies and moths.
