Piñon Pine (Two-Needle Pinyon)
$12.00
Pinus edulis
Pinyon pines are iconic evergreen trees that frequently accompany juniper trees in piñon and juniper woodlands of the foothills of the southwestern U.S. Large, edible seeds (pine nuts) are beloved by wildlife and humans. Very slow growing. Can grow in any soil that drains well and must have full sun. Although very drought tolerant due to a taproot that reaches 20-40′ deep and an extensive lateral root system, this species is threatened by increasingly dry conditions in the southwest. All the more reason to add one to the garden now.
