In the wild, cutleaf coneflower can be found growing in riparian areas at higher elevations (montane and subalpine zones). Commonly found along streams, it can grow up to 6 or 7 feet tall before it tops out at a sweet yellow coneflower that butterflies love. In the foothills and lower elevations it will need shade, especially in the afternoon. Spreads via rhizomes. Host plant for 12 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars.
